    Program Description

The MAHEC Boone Rural Family Medicine Residency is an unopposed, community-based, university-affiliated program in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina dedicated to training physician-citizens to serve and lead in rural communities. Distinctive features include full-spectrum family medicine training across outpatient, inpatient, obstetric, pediatric, and community settings; rural training in a Health Professional Shortage Area; strong obstetrics experience with deliveries and women's health procedures; robust inpatient medicine and critical care exposure in an open ICU; longitudinal procedural and point-of-care ultrasound training; sports medicine and musculoskeletal training through collaboration with our Sports Medicine Fellowship; and opportunities for leadership, advocacy, teaching, and community engagement. Our small program size allows for exceptional resident autonomy, close faculty mentorship, and a collaborative culture.
