    Program Description

    UPMC Rural Family Medicine Residency is designed to prepare family medicine residents to work in underserved, rural communities.  The curriculum immerses residents into the community and is designed after the “Rural Generalist” model emphasizing a deep, broad medical knowledge and working in scarcity.  The program is an integrated rural training program with two residents per year that begin their training at UPMC Williamsport which is a Level II Trauma Center.  In Williamsport, the residents learn the basics of practicing family medicine in preparation for a move to either UPMC Cole or UPMC Wellsboro located in rural areas of Northcentral Pa. Both UPMC Wellsboro or UPMC Cole are Critical Access Hospitals where residents work one-on-one with experienced rural physicians and can polish their family medicine skills. As an added benefit, both rural sites offer free housing in the second and third years! The NRMP match codes for the two tracks are: Wellsboro: 2336120C2 and Cole: 2336120C1.
