Program Description

The Morehouse School of Medicine Dominican Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program in Santa Cruz, California, was established in 2022 to address health equity in our local and global communities. We welcomed our first 8 residents in June 2024 to start our 3-year program dedicated to training full spectrum, culturally competent family physicians.Our first class represent our effort to train a diverse, under-represented in medicine, talented, happy cohort to meet our mission. While ‘new’, our program is well-grounded as part of graduate medical education that was started at Morehouse School of Medicine, a traditionally black university, in 1981 and CommonSpirit/Dignity Health, who sponsors GME programs which have served communities for more than half a century, currently training more than 2,000 residents in dozens of states nationally. . Our Residency Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) Committee ensures that all our faculty and resident recruitment, curriculum, didactics, research and scholarly activity, evaluations, Individual Learning Plans and every other aspect of our residency is developed and operated through our "equity lens." As the first and only residency program in our county, we have intentionally organized ourselves as a community based program with the two hospitals in Santa Cruz County, the two FQHCs, and other major groups that all align with our mission to promote GME to serve the needs of our community, especially the underserved. Our program embraces cutting edge teaching and learning with Competency Based Medical Education and structured weekly Master Adaptic Learning Sessions. A review of our website will describe the breadth and depth of our curriculum which includes being one of three programs in CA with ACMGE Osteopathic Recognition; Integrative and Functional Medicine for the Underserved; Procedures/POCUS; strong inpatient (including ICU and Schwartz Rounds) and outpatient rotations (Clinic First model); Integrative Behavioral Health which includes Addiction Medicine training; all aspects of women's health including Reproductive Justice (RHEDI certification); Sports Medicine; Geriatrics (the program director is certified as are three faculty); Palliative and Hospice Care; what will be an award winning Wellness program, and many other "selectives" additions to our core rotations that robustly support each resident's professional growth via "tracks".
