Program Description
In addition to robust general training, Willmar residents will find very strong community health, maternity care and procedural training. The Willmar community and region is geographically rural and very diverse economically, culturally, and linguistically. The Willmar school district is less than 40% Caucasian, has more than 20% of students with English as a second language, and at least 10 languages and dialects are spoken in the middle school. This unique combination will immerse residents in opportunities to develop skills that will help them advocate for these populations. There are numerous opportunities in Willmar for the PGY-2 and PGY-3 residents to gain exposure to and become engaged in a longitudinal community health program. A unique example is our partnership with a community access clinic for underserved populations. Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar has a high-volume OB service with more than 500 deliveries annually. The Family Medicine department provides a large percentage of this care with the support of our OB/Gyn colleagues. Willmar residents will be able to develop procedural skills commensurate with their interest. Procedures such as colonoscopy, colposcopy, stress testing, vasectomy, POCUS and hospital-based procedures are readily available to motivated learners.
