• Student Delegate to the American Medical Association - Medical Student Section (AMA-MSS)

The application cycle for this position is closed. The application for the 2024 - 2025 leadership cycle will open in the spring of 2024. Information is available below for those who may be thinking about this opportunity.

Applications for this position are reviewed by the AAFP Resident and Student Leadership Screening Committee and candidates are appointed by the AAFP Board of Directors. All applicants will be notified by September 30, 2023.

Represent family medicine and the AAFP at the American Medical Association’s two annual business meetings. The AAFP supports two medical student members to serve as delegate and alternate delegate to the AMA Medical Student Section. Through the year-long term these two members will share delegate and alternate roles.

The AMA House of Delegates (HOD) annually allocates delegate positions to state and specialty societies based on the number of their members that are also AMA members. The allocation is announced on or before February 1 of each year, and the delegate count is adjusted accordingly. Depending on the delegation size, there will be an opportunity for one MSS representative to also serve as a HOD delegate for the Annual and Interim meetings that year. This additional responsibility will require two or three extra days of service at the AMA HOD meeting. Travel expenses, including per-diem payment, will be provided by the AAFP. If an increase occurs, additional information will be provided by AAFP Medical Education staff.

    Responsibilities

    Term: October 1, 2023 – September 30, 2024

    • Participate in the live business sessions of the AMA Medical Student Section conducted during the term of service, including virtual business such as reference committee hearings
    • Consider all business before the AMA MSS at each meeting and determine how to act on that business based on the policies of the AAFP and interests of AAFP student members
    • Research items of interest to family medicine, the AAFP, and its student members to bring an informed opinion to business discussion
    • Participate in a caucus of AAFP delegates to the AMA MSS, Resident Fellow Section, and Young Physician Section in preparation for the AMA Interim Meeting and the AMA Annual Meeting
    • Possibility of serving as an AAFP delegate to the AMA House of Delegates during one meeting each term
