• Credit Calculation and Credit Terms

    Credit Calculation

CME providers will need to determine the amount of credits to request prior to completing the online application for AAFP CME credit. How-to calculate credit depends on the session format(s) you’ve selected in your credit application. Here’s a breakdown on how to calculate credit by format.

    Live
    In-Person or Online:

    • Credit is calculated based on the amount of formal interaction time between faculty and learners.
    • Credit is designated in 15 minute or 0.25 credit increments and rounded to the nearest quarter hour.
    • When concurrent sessions are offered, the time is only counted once based on the overall number of minutes in which one learner could participate.
    • Welcomes, announcements, introductory remarks, course overviews, receptions, and adjournment do not qualify for CME and should not be included in the amount of credit requested.

    Knowledge Self-Assessment (KSA), Live:

    • Each KSA activity is worth 8 Prescribed credits. Credit is pre-filled in the application.

    Enduring Materials, Self-Study

    • Credit is calculated based on the average time it would take a learner to complete the activity.
    • Credit is designated in 15 minute or 0.25 credit increments and rounded to the nearest quarter hour.
    • Welcomes, announcements, introductory remarks, and course overviews do not qualify for CME and should not be included in the amount of credit requested.

    Medical Journals

    • Credit is designated based on one credit per eligible article.

    Performance Improvement (PICME)

    • Each PICME activity is worth 20 credits. Credit is pre-filled in the application.
    • Learners completing Stage A are awarded 5 credits; Stages A & B, 10 credits; A, B and C are worth a total of 20 credits.

    Point of Care

    • Each Point of Care activity is designated for 20 credits. Credit is pre-filled in the application. Learners should be awarded 0.50 credits per search.

    Additional Information

    • Blended learning activities include two or more session formats. The amount of credit calculated is based upon the session formats.
    • Only the sessions of the activity that comply with the AAFP eligibility requirements may be included in the amount of credit requested. CME sessions must be clearly identified in the activity materials.
    • If the ALSO course is a blended activity, then credit should only be requested for the live in-person format. The credit for the enduring format has already been determined and will be communicated separately.
    • Translation to Practice® (t2p®), an activity supplement, is 2 credits per every session with a t2p add-on. Note, the system will automatically add credit for t2p based on the number of topics for which t2p was selected in the credit application. Providers should not include credit for t2p in their credit request.
    • All session formats are eligible for AAFP Prescribed or Elective credit except for KSAs, which are only eligible for Prescribed credit.
    • Learners are responsible for claiming credit commensurate with their participation in a CME activity.

    Credit Terms

Credit terms vary depending on the session format(s) you’ve selected within your credit application. All credit terms are a maximum of one year in length, except for PICME activities, which are eligible for a 2-year credit term. The credit term for blended learning activities is dependent on the session formats included in that activity.
