• Resident Delegate to the AAFP Congress of Delegates

    This position is elected at the AAFP National Conference and candidates should plan to attend. Experience Congress of Delegates and learn the governance process of the AAFP in this national resident leadership position. See below for details on this role, as well as the current travel calendar associated with serving in this position. 

    Applicants are elected as alternate delegates and serve as alternate delegates to this year's AAFP Congress of Delegates, alongside the current delegates. Following the meeting, those elected serve as delegates through next year's Congress of Delegates.

    Responsibilities

    Term: August 1, 2023 – September 24, 2024

    • Represents resident member interests, as voted on by the National Congress of Medical Students, at the AAFP Congress of Delegates by following resolutions and issues pertinent to family medicine residents
    • Serve as a member of the AAFP Commission on Education (COE), the COE Subcommittee on Resident and Student Issues, and the COE Subcommittee on Graduate Curriculum
    • Keeps lines of communication open with resident members to facilitate dialogue on issues important to residents
    • Facilitates discussion and advises resolution writing at the AAFP National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students

    Application Summary

    Candidates for this position are elected at the AAFP National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students. Candidates should plan to attend the entirety of the conference. Candidates are required to be nominated at the conference, deliver a 2 - 3 minute speech, participate in a candidate Q&A, and, if elected, participate in a new officer orientation Saturday afternoon of the conference.

    Eligibility Criteria

    • Demonstrated interest and involvement in family medicine groups or state organizations as a student or resident preferred
    • Does not need previous experience in a national AAFP leadership position
    • Must have residency director's endorsement that time away from residency will be granted to attend meetings
    • Must be an AAFP resident or fellow member

    Time commitment away from residency: Approximately 10 - 15 days (includes weekends) for travel and attendance at meetings.

    Funding: Travel is covered according to AAFP Travel Policy. A per diem covers expenses to travel to and attend the meeting, including lodging and food.
