• AAFP Applauds Passage Bipartisan Safer Communities Act

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Friday, June 24, 2022
    Statement attributable to:
    Sterling Ransone, Jr., MD, President
    American Academy of Family Physicians

“The AAFP is encouraged that Congress has passed the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act to curb firearms violence. Gun violence is a public health epidemic—one that has no regard for age, location, or race. It is a public health crisis that family physicians know all too well. The AAFP has long advocated for policies that address gun violence.

“We hope the provisions in this landmark legislation, including protections to restrict access to firearms, school safety measures, and investment in mental health programs, will help mitigate the devastating impact firearm violence has had on our patients and the communities we serve.”

About American Academy of Family Physicians
Founded in 1947, the AAFP represents 130,000 physicians and medical students nationwide. It is the largest medical society devoted solely to primary care. Family physicians conduct approximately one in five office visits — that’s 192 million visits annually or 48 percent more than the next most visited medical specialty. Today, family physicians provide more care for America’s underserved and rural populations than any other medical specialty. Family medicine’s cornerstone is an ongoing, personal patient-physician relationship focused on integrated care.
