This course presents a model for the prevention of psychotropic medication side-effects and discontinuation syndrome. An evidence-based rationale for a slow taper secondary to the mitigation of biochemical imbalances is presented as a discontinuation protocol. Thereafter, nutritional interventions to mitigate medication-induced weight gain, sexual dysfunction, and tardive dyskinesia are reviewed. The course concludes with a discussion about the role of medications in ethical medical practice.
