Human trafficking affects every community in Michigan across age, gender, ethnicity, and socio-economic backgrounds. Family physicians are viewed as critical with their capacity to identify victims of human trafficking. One U.S. study found that more than 85% of survivors had contact with a healthcare professional while being trafficked. Identifying a victim of human trafficking can be complicated, and requires an understanding of the law as well as the warning signs.
