About Family Medicine Experience (FMX)

What is the Family Medicine Experience (FMX)? 

The American Academy of Family Physicians’ (AAFP) largest annual meeting, provides five days of education, networking, inspiration, and patient-centered solutions for thousands of family physicians.

Since 1949, this annual event has grown to become the largest gathering for family physicians to connect and celebrate all things family medicine. Formerly known as Scientific Assembly, this annual conference was renamed in 2015 to showcase its dedication to the family medicine community. After five days of celebrating the best specialty ever, attendees are passionately refueled and ready to implement into practice the latest resources and education learned at FMX. 


How is coronavirus (COVID-19) impacting the AAFP FMX? 

This year, in light of COVID-19 and with respect to the health and safety of all involved, the AAFP’s largest annual meeting, Family Medicine Experience (FMX), is going virtual. Thanks to innovative technology, this can’t-miss event will continue to offer attendees evidence-based CME (Live and Self Study), thought-provoking Main Stage sessions, access to patient care solutions, and networking opportunities to unite family physicians now and in the future.

What are the registration fees for one-day registration and how does this work?  

One-day registrations is not offered this year.  

What is the cancellation policy?

AAFP must receive notice of cancellation by September 22, 2020. Cancellations or no-shows after this date are not eligible for a refund. Requests for full cancellations will be refunded less a $50 administrative fee.

Please allow up to four weeks for delivery of refund. Fees will be refunded the same way they were paid to the AAFP. This policy covers registration and ticketed events.

The AAFP is not responsible for monies registrants may have spent on penalty or nonrefundable airline tickets or hotel deposits in the event this course is canceled or sold out. If a program is canceled by the AAFP, every effort will be made to notify registrants as least 30 days prior to the first day of the course, and registration fees will be refunded.

What should I expect after I register for the FMX virtual event?

You will receive a registration confirmation. You will receive another email closer to the event date to access the virtual event. We will provide more details on the specifics around technical logistics and other important attendee information as we get closer to the event date.

Will I receive the AAFP Foundation Pin or FMX Pin I purchased?

Yes, the AAFP Foundation will mail purchased pins after FMX.

Cancellation of the In-Person Event / Refunds

Why did you cancel the in-person 2020 AAFP Family Medicine Experience (FMX)?

As you are aware, the World Health Organization declared on January 31, 2020, the coronavirus constitutes a “public health emergency of international concern.” After careful consideration of information from the CDC, local, state, federal officials and our experts, the AAFP has determined that it is necessary to cancel the in-person AAFP Family Medicine Experience (FMX), scheduled to take place Tuesday, October 13–Saturday, October 17, 2020, in Chicago, IL, and transition to a virtual event.

We know that you were looking forward to in-person AAFP FMX as an opportunity to personally engage with new information and renew professional relationships, and the decision to cancel isn’t one we took lightly. Here is why we decided to cancel the in-person event:

  • We recognize that many of you are working on the frontlines of the COVID-19 outbreak and that you need to serve patients.
  • Within the health care industry, it is important that we lead by example through social distancing and not contribute to further spread of the virus.

Will AAFP continue with the other educational events and workshops this year?

The AAFP will continue to monitor the spread of coronavirus and will make determinations on an event by event basis. First and foremost, we are committed to our mission to keep patients, families, health care workers, and communities safe and maintain our values of communication, innovation, quality, and collaboration to advance family medicine and provide solutions to enhance patient care. Livestreaming and other digital options for participation are available for some events.

What happened to my in-person FMX registration?

All FMX in-person registrations were transitioned to the virtual event registration. You’ll receive a refund for the difference from what you paid via your original form of payment. Please allow up to 45 days for a refund of the registration fee differential and any cancelled extra fee sessions and events. You will also see cancellation confirmation for the following sessions and events that you may have added to your FMX registration:

  • Paid Guest Badge(s)
  • FMX Celebration Attendee Ticket
  • FMX Celebration Guest Ticket

Will you be refunding in-person registration fees?

Are you refunding the in-person Clinical Procedure Workshop Fees?

Are you refunding all extra fee cancelled events such as ALSO courses and KSA Working Groups?

Yes, all extra fee cancelled events concurrent to FMX will receive full refund. You will receive your refund via your original form of payment within 30 days for any of the following cancelled events:

  • ALSO Instructor Course
  • ALSO Provider Course
  • Maternity Care KSA Working Group
  • Pain Management KSA Working Group
  • Hypertension KSA Working Group
  • Childcare KSA Working Group

How can I cancel my hotel room reservation?

If you made a reservation through Experient, no further action is required. Experient will cancel all hotel reservations booked in the AAFP FMX room block. Each reservation will receive a cancellation acknowledgment email. Please contact aafp@experient-inc.com  or call Customer Service toll free at 800-650-6915 if you have any questions. If you booked outside the AAFP block, you should contact the hotel directly.

May I donate my registration-related refund to the AAFP Foundation?

We appreciate your generous consideration for the ongoing need to continue supporting advances in the values of family medicine by promoting humanitarian, educational, and scientific initiatives that improve the health of all people. The best way to do this is to make an online donation(www.aafpfoundation.org) after your registration costs are refunded. Thank you for your support.

Are you refunding flight or other travel costs?

AAFP is unable to provide refunds for personally booked travel expenses. We apologize for any inconvenience and challenges this may cause you. In terms of air travel, many airlines are waiving change fees and daily updating their policies. Please contact your travel agent or airline directly to discuss specific cancellation policies and refund information.

Are you refunding entertainment costs?

We are unable to provide refunds for personally booked entertainment expenses. We apologize for any inconvenience and challenges this may cause you. Be certain to cancel all related activities including meeting and party space.

Will exhibitors be refunded for booth space or sponsorships?

Transitioning FMX to a virtual event will reduce the AAFP’s event costs, so we want to pass savings along to you. The exhibitor fee is being reduced to $3,100 corporate ($2,000 non-profit). If you already paid your fee, you will get a refund for the difference; please allow up to 45 days for this refund. What is covered in the live stream virtual event?

  • Ability to attend 31+ hours of “Live” education opportunities between CME sessions and main stage sessions.
  • A virtual expo hall is searchable categories and alphabetically so that you can find exhibitors you’re most interested in. You’ll also have the ability to chat live during exhibit hours or schedule one-on-one appointments with exhibitors.
  • Networking opportunities that include formal ways to connect as well as the ability to chat (including video chat) with fellow attendees.

When and how do I access the FMX virtual event?

Registered attendees will receive a link via email before the first live session begins on October 13 and invite you to update your profile on the FMX Virtual platform. The link will be sent to the email address you used to register to provide information on how you will access all of the conference content. You’ll use the same link each day to access the platform for the live conference.

What if I don't receive the link to access the FMX virtual event?

How do I update my profile and is it necessary?

The “My Profile” link will be on the event page once you logged in. You may find the link on the upper right corner of the page by clinking your name and the “My Profile” on the left navigation. It is helpful to have an updated profile so other attendees could easily find you and connect with you or be able to find peers with similar interests and practice as you. If you would like to update your email address on your profile, contact events@aafp.org to update it in your registration information. Please provide your name and registration ID.  

When will times and schedules for live sessions be announced for the FMX virtual event?

The FMX schedule is available online.

When and how could I add the FMX virtual event sessions to my schedule?

We will provide more details on the specifics around technical logistics and other important attendee information as we get closer to the event date. Instructions on how to log in and navigate the virtual event platform will be sent via email to the email address on your registration.

How do I launch a live stream session?

Go to the sessions schedule or your schedule tab and click the title of the session you want to view at a specific date and time. Click the play icon on the session page and participate in a live session. The chat feature should be available to engage with other attendees and presenters. 

How can I participate in the sessions or ask presenters questions?  

Each session page will include a chat feature to ask questions and interact with the presenter.

How do I access and download handouts?  

Your FMX registration fee includes online access to all session handouts. Download individual session handouts from the FMX Virtual platform. Tap a session of interest to open the session page and access the PDF handout.  You may also access them here.

How do I claim or report CME credits?  

To claim or report CME credits, you may click on the link on each session page you attended in the FMX virtual platform or go to aafp.org/fmx/reportcme and click the link “Report CME” and report the sessions you participated in. Report your CME, evaluate speakers, and email your certificate directly from the platform or report it at aafp.org/fmx/reportcme. November 13 is the last day you can access the FMX reporting tool.

Where do I go to download the FMX certificate of participation?

Will the virtual event be a combination of “Live” & “On Demand” sessions?

Yes, live streaming sessions will be presented “live” and you may claim Live CME credits for Livestream sessions you participate in (up to 36.50 live CME credits. Additional live CME credits available through extra-fee procedure courses). Live sessions will be recorded for you to view after the live stream sessions. Recordings are available via FMX On Demand, where you could claim self-study enduring CME credits. Twenty-five sessions are included with your FMX registration. This complimentary content will help reinforce knowledge you’ll gain at the live meeting and provide access to specific sessions you might miss. An additional 130 recorded sessions are available on FMX On Demand–Upgrade for an additional fee.

Are sessions recorded and how soon can I access them?

Yes. A total of 155 CME sessions will be recorded. You can view a recording of a session within 24 hours after it concludes via FMX On Demand. Twenty-five sessions are included with your FMX registration. This complimentary content will help reinforce knowledge you’ll gain at the live meeting and provide access to specific sessions you might miss. An additional 130 recorded sessions are available on FMX On Demand – Upgrade for an additional fee. You may claim self-study enduring CME credits when viewing the sessions and completing a quiz on FMX On Demand(fmx.ondemand.org).

Do I have to purchase FMX On Demand to claim self-study CME credits?

How can I access the FMX On Demand sessions and claim self-study CME credits?

To access FMX On Demand:

  • Visit the FMX On Demand website(fmx.ondemand.org)
  • Click on the Login link at the top of the page. FMX Attendees and AAFP Members, click on the link below “Are you a Member or an Attendee?” and log in with your AAFP credentials.

When should I expect to receive the FMX On Demand Flash Drive I purchased?

You should expect to receive the FMX On Demand flash drive within 12 weeks post FMX.

How do  I connect with other attendees and presenters?

There will be an opportunity to engage in a live chat or video chat with peers and presenters during FMX live days, October 13-17 anywhere the chat feature is available or by scheduling an appointment.

Will there be Clinical Procedures Workshops offered?

How do I connect with an exhibitor?

Search exhibitors by alpha and categories. Visit the virtual exhibit booths and leave your virtual “business card” by clicking on the "Email me more information" link for follow up information. You will also be able to view live demos within virtual booths, schedule 1:1 conferences/private demos. Exhibit dates and times are:

What device can I use to access the live stream virtual event?

The live stream virtual event can be accessed by most mobile devices, including tablets and smartphones. However, we strongly recommend using a desktop computer or laptop with a hardline internet connection for best performance and experience.

What are the system requirements?

For ideal viewing and participation, the learner should have access to the following:

  • Adobe Flash Plug-in
  • Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari
  • High-speed internet connection
  • Also compatible with iOS (Apple) and Android based tablets and smartphones

How do I know if my device and settings are appropriate for the live stream?

Before attending the online event, be sure to check your system’s compatibility with the live streaming platform. This will ensure that you have all the proper items required for accessing the live event. We will provide more details on the specifics around technical logistics and other important attendee information as we get closer to the event date.

How can I optimize my home internet for a better streaming experience?

  • Maximize your internet connection by connecting your computer by an ethernet cable directly from your internet router. If you must use Wi-Fi, try and use the 5GHz network.
  • Wi-Fi works best when you are 5-8 ft from your router.
  • Give your router space to breathe by placing it in “free space”. This means not in a TV stand or behind the couch.
  • Check and tighten all cable connections, with your router and with your computer.
  • Give your router time to rest by turning it off for at least 10 seconds and restarting it. This will boost your internet speed by a few extra mbps.
  • Close out other apps on your device that are not essential to your live stream.
  • Disconnect other non-essential devices around your home (or office) that are connected to the internet: streaming devices, tablets, phones, video game systems, and/or smart TVs. 

Can I participate in the virtual event if I’m visually or hearing impaired?

Can I share my login with my colleagues?

No, each attendee requires a registration to log in. Your login will only have your profile information.

Will there be a Mobile app?

No mobile app will be used in 2020.
