Jonathan Karnes, MD

Dr. Karnes earned a medical degree from the Quillen College of Medicine at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, and completed his family medicine residency at Maine-Dartmouth Family Medicine Residency. He completed a fellowship in underserved dermatology at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio under the mentorship of Richard Usatine, MD. Dr. Karnes now practices medical and surgical dermatology in central Maine. Since 2012, he has been the medical director of a residency-affiliated dermatology practice, providing patient access and crafting a residency dermatology curriculum relevant to needs of family physicians. His interests include access to care, access to dermatology education, skin cancer treatment, cutaneous surgery, dermoscopy, mole mapping, clinical photography, and phototherapy. Dr. Karnes works in a community that leverages an academic environment to extend dermatology access regardless of a patient’s ability to pay, and finds creative ways to improve dermatology education in family medicine.
