Karen L. Smith, MD, FAAFP, PA

Family physician, Raeford, North Carolina

Dr. Smith earned her medical degree at Hahnemann University School of Medicine, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and completed her residency through Duke/FAHEC in Fayetteville, North Carolina. She has worked with the North Carolina Medical Society and the North Carolina Academy of Family Physicians, for which she served as president in 2005, and she is the North Carolina AFP’s delegate to the AAFP.  At the national level, Dr. Smith is a former chair of the AAFP’s Commission on Quality and Practice and currently sits on the Commission on Governmental Advocacy. She has been a part of the North Carolina Division of Medical Assistance Advisory Board for 13 years. Her interests include treatment of substance abuse disorders, health care reform initiatives, and on-site education experience for learners in health care. Beginning in 2003, she successfully implemented an electronic health record (EHR) as part of her delivery of care in Raeford, North Carolina.
