Acne Treatment and Procedures

Since acne vulgaris is one of the most common conditions of pediatric as well as adults, participants will learn a full range of acne treatment modalities. The workshop will start with the basic review and pathophysiology of acne vulgaris. Then the standard medical acne treatment as recommended by American Academy of Dermatology will be discussed including various topicals and oral medications. The participants will learn how to register for the iPledge Program and prescribe isotretinoin (former known as Accutane). Various acne procedures will be demonstrated including acne injection and acne extraction. In addition to the active comedonal lesions, the workshop will cover procedures to treatment acne scar including microdermabrasion, chemical peels, and microneedling.

From attending this session, you will be able to:

  • Classify the severity of acne.
  • Discuss the safety and efficacy of the various classes of agents used for treating acne.
  • Explain the mechanisms of action of systemic and topical agents used to various severity of acne.
  • Describe the appropriate candidates for isotretinoin therapy, and incorporate improved protocols for the optimum use of this agent.
  • Discuss the protocols for using chemical peel as effective acne and its scar treatment.
  • Evaluate the use of microdermabrasion (with and without infusion) as an effective acne scar treatment procedure.
  • Evaluate when to use intralesional corticosteroid injections for the treatment of acne cysts and its scar.
  • Evaluate the use of acne extraction procedures.
  • Recognize the urgency of prompt treatment of acne to prevent physical and psychological scarring.
