Clinical Procedures Workshops

Ultrasound of the Abdominal Aorta, IVC and Renal/Bladder with Online Module (Flipped Classroom)

You will emerge understanding how to operate typical point-of-care ultrasound equipment, obtain diagnostic quality images of the organs concerned, distinguish normal from abnormal and be able to recognize when further consultation is indicated. Recommendations and resources for further study will also be provided.

You will be expected to scan each other and should dress accordingly.

Experience a unique flipped classroom educational format. First, watch an online CME video module at your convenience. Once on site at FMX, attend the associated Clinical Procedures Workshop. Earn CME for both the online module and onsite workshop.

By completing the online module before you arrive at FMX, you will be able to:

  • Describe the patient positioning and acoustic windows for sonographic examination of the abdominal aorta, IVC, kidneys and urinary bladder.
  • Recognize the normal sonographic appearance of the abdominal aorta, IVC, kidneys and urinary bladder.
  • Recognize common sonographic abnormalities of the abdominal aorta, IVC, kidneys and urinary bladder.

From attending the workshop at FMX, you will be able to:

  • Describe the rationale for performing AAA screening.
  • Identify normal from abnormal abdominal aorta appearance and know when the aorta has NOT been adequately imaged.
  • Examine the IVC, and distinguish central venous overload and depletion.
  • Explain AAA screening guidelines and appropriate billing practices.
  • Identify the kidneys and bladder, identify renal obstruction and measure bladder residual volume.

Reminder: Completion of the online video module is a pre-requisite for attending the interactive workshop on site at FMX. Registrants for the workshop will receive an email in September when the module is available to watch.
