Jennifer L. Brull, MD, FAAFP
     AAFP President-elect

Jennifer L. Brull, MD, FAAFP, is a family physician in Fort Collins, CO. As an AAFP board member, she advocates on behalf of family physicians and patients nationwide to inspire positive change in the U.S. health care system.

Brull practiced family medicine in rural Plainville, Kansas for more than 20 years and now serves as vice president of clinical engagement for Aledade, a company that partners with independent primary care physicians to succeed in value-based care. She formerly served 12 years as health officer for the Rooks County Health Department and filled several roles as medical director and operations manager of urgent care and surgical clinics in the local community critical access hospital.

Brull served two years as an HIT Fellow for the Office of the National Coordinator and was recognized as a Hypertension Control Challenge Champion by the CDC in 2014. She was named a Top 25 Innovator by Modern Healthcare in 2019 and is a physician leader in performance improvement and change management.

Col. Nicole Malachowski, USAF (Ret.)

Col. Nicole Malachowski, USAF (Ret.) defies stereotypes. A leader, a combat veteran, the first woman pilot on the Thunderbirds Air Demonstration Squadron, a White House Fellow, and an inductee into both the National Women’s Hall of Fame and the Women in Aviation International Pioneer Hall of Fame, Nicole’s distinguished 21-year Air Force career exceeded her wildest dreams. But the dream came to an end when a devastating tick-borne illness left her struggling greatly to speak or walk for almost nine months.

An indomitable spirit, Nicole fought back against overwhelming odds and prevailed. Drawing on stories from her career and personal life, Nicole inspires audiences to rethink the challenges they face every day. She urges them to go beyond resilience and become resurgent. Nicole’s story empowers people with three key beliefs: failure and risk is the price of entry for achieving something great; sometimes you need to yield to overcome; and her personal mantra: “Nobody wants to lead a scripted life.”

Anupam B. Jena, MD, Phd

Anupam B. Jena, MD, Phd, is an economist, physician, and professor at Harvard University. As host of the popular Freakonomics, M.D. podcast, he tackles questions at the intersection of medicine and economics, including questions from his own research on why mortality rates rise in cities on the days that they host large marathons, why cardiac patients do better when cardiologists are out of town at national cardiology conferences, and why kids with summer birthdays are more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD.

As one of a small group of physician-economists in the world—and one of the most creative and prolific social scientists in medicine—Dr. Jena is uniquely positioned to explore where the worlds of medicine and economics collide based on his experiences as a practicing physician at Massachusetts General Hospital and his unique training as an economist.

His creative use of natural experiments—chance occurrences that we are exposed to, but often unaware of, in our lives—help us understand how health care works, the subject of his 2020 TEDMED talk. Dr. Jena’s book,Random Acts of Medicine: The Hidden Forces That Sway Doctors, Impact Patients, and Shape Our Health, was published by Doubleday in summer 2023. His work is frequently featured in the media, including The New York Times, Washington Post, and Wall Street Journal.
