2024 Scholarship Award Information

National Conference 2024 | Kansas City | August 1–3

Family Medicine Leads Scholarships to the AAFP National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students are provided by the American Academy of Family Physicians Foundation. Family Medicine Leads focuses on filling the workforce pipeline with the best and brightest, as well as supporting the development of future family medicine leaders.

All scholarships are made possible by the donations of family physicians across the country.

In 2024, 250 scholarships will be awarded to attend the National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students, August 1-3 in Kansas City, MO.

Dates to Remember

  • May 1, 2024: Application deadline
  • June 3, 2024: Notification to applicants
  • August 1-3, 2024: National Conference
  • The number of scholarships in each category varies from year to year depending on the funding level and number of applicants.
  • Up to 700 total scholarship applications will be accepted. If/when a category reaches its cap, the application will no longer allow submissions. If you see the category is closed prior to the May 1 deadline, that means it has reached its limit of applicants and you are unable to apply.
  • Scholarship recipients are selected by a panel of judges.
  • The $600 scholarship is intended to help reduce out-of-pocket expenses (registration, travel, lodging, meals) to attend National Conference.
  • All scholarship checks are awarded at National Conference. If you are unable to meet the attendance requirement or attend the Conference for any reason, your scholarship will be forfeited.

  • You must be a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) to apply. New or lapsed memberships may take one week to process. Please plan accordingly as late applications will not be accepted. Join now.
  • You may apply to one scholarship category each year (i.e. if you apply for the Student Primary Care Champion Scholarship, you may not also apply for FMIG Leaders).
  • You are not eligible to apply if you previously received a National Conference Scholarship from the AAFP Foundation (excluding Emerging Leader Institute or National Conference Virtual Scholarships).
  • Scholarships are based on your status during the 2024-25 academic year. Please apply to categories accordingly.
  • You must be able to attend the entire National Conference (defined as arriving no later than noon on Thursday, August 1, and leaving no earlier than noon on Saturday, August 3).
  • You must agree to the Family Medicine Leads Scholarship Agreement.

It is recommended you have all items listed below ready and in the required format before starting your online application.

  • Contact information (including AAFP ID)
    • Notifications regarding your application will be sent from the AAFP. If your email address associated with your AAFP account is your medical school/residency email, please ensure your institution allows external emails and/or whitelists the AAFP as a safe sender as any spam filters/firewalls could hinder your receipt of communications.
  • Answers to questions (see specific scholarship for questions)
    • You are encouraged to give considerable thought to the essay questions and draft your answers in a separate document before beginning your application.
    • The AAFP is committed to building a diverse workforce. If applicable, you may complete an optional essay to briefly describe how you identify as someone underrepresented in medicine.
  • Signed verification letter (see example)
    • A requirement on the application that will need advance preparation is a verification letter from your institution validating your expected graduation date. You will be responsible for uploading the letter at the time of application. You will be responsible for uploading the letter at the time of application. If it is submitted incomplete, your application will be classified as such and will not be considered. Please use the example as a guide. The letter must:
      • Be submitted on letterhead of the medical school or residency program that you will be attending at the time of the 2024-25 academic year
      • Include your full name, medical school or residency program name, and expected graduation date
      • Be signed and dated by the Dean of the medical school (if a student) or by the Program Director of the residency program (if a resident); must include professional title of the signer

The required online application must be completed and submitted to the AAFP by 11:59 p.m. CT on May 1, 2024. Winners will be notified on June 3, 2024.


  • When writing your answers, keep in mind that hundreds of applications are received and reviewed by the judges.
  • Make your application stand out and try to avoid clichés.
  • As the application is a chance for the judges to learn about you and your goals, you are encouraged to provide thoughtful and authentic answers.

Scholarship Categories

Early Career Student (Rising MS/OMS 1–3)
Deadline: May 1, 2024

Students who wish to apply for this award must complete an online application that includes three essay questions. You must be a MS/OMS 1–3 student during the 2024-25 academic year to apply.

Student (Rising MS/OMS4) or Resident Primary Care Champion
Deadline: May 1, 2024

Students or residents who wish to apply for this award must complete an online application that includes three essay questions. To apply for the student scholarship, you must be a MS/OMS4 student student during the 2024-25 academic year. To apply for the resident scholarship, you must be a resident during the 2024-25 academic year. 

Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG) Leaders
Deadline: May 1, 2024

The Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG) Leaders Scholarship is open to current or incoming FMIG, ACOFP Student Chapter, or other Student Primary Care Interest Group leaders. You must hold a FMIG/SIG leadership position in the 2024-25 academic year to apply. Students who wish to apply for this award must complete an online application (including contact information for your FMIG/SIG faculty advisor) that includes three essay questions. You must be a medical student during the 2024-25 academic year to apply.
