Pre-Conference Workshops

Sunday, May 5, 2024
4–7 p.m.
Price: $240

Option 1: Creating the Life You Want and Wanting the Life You Create
Speakers: Corey Martin, MD, and Mark Greenawald, MD, FAAFP, DABFM

It was Pulitzer Prize-winning author Annie Dillard who profoundly stated, “How we spend our days is how we spend our lives.” How is that going for you? Are you finding fulfillment with how you’re presently spending your days? If you’re ready to do a reframe and create a “revised version of yourself,” this dynamic workshop may be just what you’re looking for. It is designed to provide a pause and space for reflection and reconnection with your core self and, combined with the Physician Health and Well-being Conference that follows, propel you forward with conscious intention and a plan to create the life you want and want the life you create.

At the completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

1. Identify three present core values for your life and at least one current behavior that is undermining your stated values and priorities.

2. Determine one aspect of your life in which your personal/professional boundaries are too “porous” and one in which they are too impenetrable.

3. Analyze and apply a framework for understanding the importance of trust in self and others to provide the vital connections and relationships necessary for a fulfilling life.

Option 2 - Well Women in Medicine: Sustaining Successful Clinicians, Educators, Researchers, and Leaders in Medicine
Speakers:  Catherine Florio-Pipas, MD, MPH, FAAFP; Joedrecka Brown-Speights, MD, FAAFP; and Michelle Owens, DO, FAAFP , FAAHPM

This workshop aims to inspire and empower women to be leaders of change and champions of well-being for themselves and their colleagues. In collaboration with clinicians, educators, and researchers, we will focus on identifying, addressing, and navigating challenges that deplete well-being and limit leadership potential, including perspectives of intersectionality and bias in medicine.

Participants will be provided the time, tools, and permission to increase their knowledge and skills and the confidence to apply best practices for women as doctors, family members, and individuals. Each attendee will design a personal well-being plan, based upon self-reflection on what is completed, in progress, and remains to be done to promote well-being in their personal and professional lives.

At the completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
1. Discuss literature on challenges and disproportionate disadvantages faced by women in medicine.

2. Reflect on evidence-based well-being strategies and stories that contribute to personal and professional success.

3. Apply learnings to advance the well-being, leadership and longevity of women in medicine.

Option 3 - Reclaiming Creativity: Rediscover Well-being Through Creative Self-Expression
Speakers: Belinda Fu, MD, and Briana Tierno, PhD

Many healers find their creativity diminished by years of clinical training, practice, and adult responsibilities. In this workshop, we will start fresh, reclaiming the innate creativity of our childhoods and rediscovering our voices. We’ll start by creating a safe, supportive, and joyful environment, and then we’ll embark on an exploratory journey through different forms of creative expression, including writing, improvisation, drawing, play, storytelling, and movement, doing a mix of individual and group work as we support one another. This workshop is ideal for both those who are “creative-curious” and wish to begin their creative journey in a safe space, and “lapsed creatives” who are looking for a creative kick-start. By the end of the workshop, participants will have reacquainted themselves with their innate, playful, engaged, expressive, creative voices, and will leave with individualized strategies for continuing their creativity and wellness journeys as individuals and in the community. Come ready to reflect, laugh, play, cheer, and discover!

At the completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
1. Explore multiple artistic avenues for expressing personal creativity.

2. Assess connections between creativity and well-being.

3. Identify personal barriers to creative expression and identify solutions.

4. Establish creative communities for nurturing creative well-being.

Additional Fee Sessions

Enrollment is limited to 20 participants.

Tuesday, May 7, 2024
5–6:30 p.m.

Option 1: Culinary Workshop: Walk the Walk, Talk the Talk, and Heal Thyself
Amy Mechley, MD, FAAFP, DipABFM, DipABLM

This workshop will explain the science behind culinary medicine and the optimal food-as-medicine plan for preventing and treating most diseases (i.e., heart disease, cancer, diabetes). This session will feature a LIVE cooking demo. Dinner will be provided, along with pre-set salads.

At the completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

1. Discuss the science supporting culinary medicine for the prevention and treatment of disease.

2. Point out strategies to implement culinary medicine into a busy schedule.

3. Select at least one culinary medicine strategy to implement in your daily life.

4. Consider prescribing a food-as-medicine plan for self and for patients.
