• Reducing Inappropriate Antibiotic Prescribing by Primary Care Clinicians

This project was conducted from July 1, 2009, through December 2010 and was funded by a grant from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). We sought to test an effective strategy for reducing the inappropriate use of antibiotics in primary care office practices. In this randomized control trial, we aimed to identify a strategy to decrease the emergence of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria in the community by primary care clinicians.

    Our specific aims were:

    1. Reduced use of antibiotics to treat conditions for which those drugs are known not to be effective.
    2. Decreased prescribing of broad-spectrum antibiotics to treat common bacterial infections.
