Family Physicians: Don't Wait for Flu Season, Prevention is Key

Don’t Wait for the Flu to hit: Prevention is Key
Everyone is at risk for getting the flu. According to the CDC, each year, it is estimated that millions get sick with the flu, while hundreds of thousands are hospitalized, and thousands to tens of thousands of people die each year from the flu. Family physicians have one message: Prevent the flu before flu season even starts with a flu shot.

Prevention and Control of Seasonal Influenza With Vaccines
The AAFP recommends that physicians offer influenza vaccination as soon as it becomes available each year and continue to provide the vaccine throughout the flu season. The AAFP has adopted the CDC 2017-2018 recommendations(www.cdc.gov) for the prevention and control of influenza with vaccines, which are consistent with that of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices.(www.cdc.gov)

Flu season may not be here yet, but there are preventive measures you can take now. Always wash your hands with soap and water; cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve, not your hands; eat well and get plenty of rest.  And most important, before flu season even starts, get a flu shot. Remember, you can’t get the flu from the flu shot. Watch this familydoctor.org public service announcement to learn more.
