Former Blue Cross Blue Shield Executive Tom Bowser Joins TransforMED Board of Managers

LEAWOOD, Kan. – TransforMED today announced Tom Bowser, immediate past president and CEO of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City and immediate past chairman of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, was appointed to serve a 3 year term on its board of managers. The appointment became effective Jan. 1, 2011. TransforMED is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the American Academy of Family Physicians focused on helping primary care medical practices adopt the patient-centered medical home model of care.

Bowser has nearly 40 years of health care management experience, including 25 years with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City, 8 years with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma, and 2 years with the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association. He began his career with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City in 1969 and became the company's president and CEO in 2001. He was elected chairman of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association in 2008 – the highest elected office within the national Blues system. Bowser held concurrent positions until his recent retirement from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas City in December 2010 when his two-year term as chairman of Association board ended. Bowser also was president of Saint Luke’s Health Ventures in the 1980s.
Bowser has served the Kansas City community as past chairman of the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce, past chairman of the Kansas City Area Development Council and as a board member of the Civic Council of Greater Kansas City. He also serves as a board member of the BCS Financial Corporation, the University of Kansas Endowment Association and the University of Kansas Edwards Campus.
Bowser holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Kansas.
