LEAWOOD, Kan. — TransforMED, a subsidiary of the American Academy of Family Physicians(, today announced that, effective immediately, Bruce Bagley, MD, will assume the role of president and chief executive officer. Bagley has served as interim president and CEO of the organization since February 2013.

In his role, Bagley will serve as key spokesperson for the company. Additionally, he will direct overall management and oversee the strategic development of the company's product and service lines. He will also remain an active participant in the development, deployment and implementation of performance measures and continue to advocate for the importance of primary care as the foundation of a redesigned U.S. health care system.

“The TransforMED Board of Managers conducted an extensive, national search before selecting Dr. Bagley for the job,” said William Soper, MD, MBA, board chair. “He served the company well during his interim assignment, and we are confident that he will do an outstanding job of leading TransforMED into the future of patient-centered medical home transformation in the context of patient-centered medical neighborhoods and accountable care organizations.”

Previously, Bagley served as the medical director for quality improvement for both the AAFP and TransforMED. Prior to joining the TransforMED staff in 2011, he enjoyed a long history of leadership with the AAFP where he also served as the organization's president from 1999 to 2000 and its board chair from 2000 to 2001. Later, his expertise was recognized on the national quality stage when he served from 2005 to 2007 as a Malcolm Baldrige Quality Award examiner.

“I am excited to have the opportunity to lead this extraordinary team of people we have at TransforMED,” Bagley said. “As the health care system becomes more integrated, it will be critical to ensure primary care practices are equipped to engage patients by using the best tools and technology available, and to continually focus on quality as a means to improve population health in communities nationwide. TransforMED is poised to excel in this arena.”

During his nearly 30-year practice career, Bagley provided the full range of family medicine services in a single-specialty family medicine group practice in Albany, N.Y. Under his leadership, the 10-physician group was a well-known pioneer in the community in adapting to the challenges of managed care, quality improvement, informatics, and patient-centered care. Bagley is nationally recognized expert on performance measurement, PCMH office redesign, electronic health records and health care leadership.

“Dr. Bagley’s immense experience lends itself well to the ability to forge partnerships with technology vendors and other high-profile health care stakeholders,” Soper said. “His trusted advisement and consultative skills will prove valuable to medical practices as new delivery systems are developed and implemented for the betterment of patient care and overall health.”

Bagley has been board-certified by the American Board of Family Medicine since 1976. He earned his medical degree from Albany Medical College in Albany, N.Y., and completed his family medicine residency at Saint Joseph's Hospital family medicine residency program in Syracuse, N.Y. He has also achieved the AAFP Degree of Fellow, an earned degree awarded to family physicians for distinguished service and continuing medical education.
