Description

The Maine Medical Center (MMC) Sports Medicine Program is a division of the MMC's Family Medicine Dept, and the fellowship is a collaborative effort with Orthopaedic Associates (OA) of Portland, a multi-specialty orthopedic group. Teaching and consulting faculty are drawn from MMC, OA, and experts in the community. MMC and the Portland community present a wide array of clinical, teaching, and research resources and opportunities. The Fellowship consists of a 1 or 2 year (optional) track. The 2 year position provides an academic track allowing the fellow to refine their musculoskeletal skills while focusing on clinical research and program development. The Sports Medicine clinical responsibilites are primarily through MMC Sports Medicine and OA of Portland. Training room, team, and sideline experiences are provided at several area colleges and universities, local and regional high schools, and mass participation events. The sports medicine fellows are heavily involved in the Education of MMC Primary Care Residents, as well as medical students. In addition, the fellows have ample opportunity to provide educational outreach in sports medicine to community audiences. Each fellow is expected to produce publishable work and actively participate in research efforts of the program. Involmement in the American College of Sports Medicine and American Medical Society for Sports Medicine is encouraged.
