Description

The Via Christi FM Residency program encourages residents to pursue 1-month global health elective rotations during their second or third year of residency (we require a rural or an international rotation). International sites vary and are usually resident initiated and program facilitated but must be deemed secure by the US State Dept. Additionally, we offer a 1-year, post residency global health fellowship (IFMF) which is a practical training program specifically for family physicians whose purpose is to use their medical skills in serving the poor and underserved cross-culturally, particularly in low/middle income countries of the developing world.

Field experience

The rotation experience during residency will depend on the chosen location but many residents select locations that will allow them to practice full scope family medicine with inpatient, outpatient and obstetrics with c-sections. The Global Health (IFMF) fellowship, which is open to residency graduates from outside programs, includes: two months certificate-level course in Tropical Medicine and Public Health, five months of on-campus rotations (surgical trauma, burn care, spinal anesthesia, ultrasonography, ortho trauma, and dentistry), and five months of practical, on-the-field experience at a partnering mission hospital, primarily in Africa (Niger, Rwanda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Kenya) or Central America.

Didactics

On-campus Global Health lecture series topics, computer-based learning in tropical medicine, case presentations in tropical medicine.
