Field experience
The host institute offers the resident and medical students an exposure to social and community medicine in an underserved area in India. They learn about health care in an under resourced area. Besides direct clinical experience they also work on projects such as women's empowerment, children's education, microcredit, nutrition of children, care of children with disabilities and many other areas that affect lives in underserved communities. One of the added benefits during this elective is that the participants work closely with volunteers from many other countries- e.g. European countries, the UK, Australia and New Zealand.
Didactics
There is no formal didactics during the rotation. However, as part of preparation for the trip, the participants receive training from local professors and residency faculty. They are taught about global health in general and also focus areas particular to the host institute and region.
