Field experience
With the help of our host and the Camp Hope Foundation, we provide basic primary care to several underserved populations in Quito, Ecuador, and perhaps in an area outside the city as well. This includes setting up temporary clinics, with only the supplies we bring, and working in established facilities that have some supplies. Previous sites have included: day care centers serving poorer areas of the city, a center for education and rehabilitation for disabled children (Camp Hope), a drug and alcohol treatment program, the city landfill, a juvenile detention center, a center for abused women and children, and a small orphanage (Casa Hogar). The rotation is generally one-three weeks in length, and most residents use an additional week of vacation during the rotation. This rotation does not take place every year.
Didactics
Residents participate in case presentations with their peers and a faculty member regularly, and each resident researches and presents relevant topics to the group during the rotation. Also, the group presents a conference to the residency program about their experience upon their return.
