    Program Description

University of Colorado FM Residency is leading the way in designing family medicine residency curriculum for the 21st Century. We revised our curriculum to allow residents to actively participate in and learn the skills to reach medicine's Quadruple Aim. Our program’s goal is to prepare highly competent family physicians who are equipped with the skills to create and work in the new model of care for family medicine. Our curriculum features three skill building blocks in the first year and each prepares residents for the hospital rotations that follow. The second half of our residency curriculum has one month focused on teaching the practical skills and concepts of transformed primary care. Our curriculum emphasizes developing resident skills in health behavior change counseling, information gathering and community integration. This focus on the PCMH continues throughout the third year of training with considerable time spent learning and working in the residency’s outpatient practices. Throughout the three years we provide rigorous training in the clinical elements of family medicine training. Our core residents train in two tracks, one associated with University of Colorado Hospital and a second with Denver Health Medical Center. The University Hospital track’s practice is located in a new, growing neighborhood, Stapleton, located east of downtown Denver. The Denver Health track’s practice is a federally qualified community health center All residents train at three of the major hospital sites of the University of Colorado School of Medicine – University of Colorado Hospital, Denver Health Medical Center and Children’s Hospital Colorado. While many program graduates stay in Colorado, they are working all over the country. Some joined private practices. We consistently place graduates in practices dedicated to caring for the poor and underserved including the Denver Health community health system and other clinics focused on serving this population. Graduates have gone to rural and urban sites. A number of our residents have become faculty members. Several of our residents have pursued fellowship training in Sports Medicine, Palliative Medicine, Addiction, and advanced training in Obstetrics. You’ll be joining a great group of faculty and residents. The residents become your extended family while you are here, and often join together for after work activities. The faculty is highly regarded and many of them have national reputations for teaching excellence. The program is friendly to residents with families or who have plans to begin one. Denver, Colorado is a beautiful place to live and play with a wide variety of outdoor recreational opportunities in the Rocky Mountains. It offers an array of urban amenities without a large city feel.
