St. Francis Family Medicine Residency Program (SFFM) is a Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Medicine-affiliated Family Medicine training program associated with St. Francis Medical Center in Midlothian, Virginia. Since accepting our first residents in 2005, SFFM has rapidly developed into a desirable destination for medical students who wish to complete their training in Family Medicine. SFFM received more than 500 applications for the six available slots offered for the intern class of 2009. To date, the residents of SFFM have already played key roles in developing the academic reputation of the program by being published in scholarly journals, presenting at state and local educational conferences, teaching medical students from VCU and other medical schools, representing resident interests on the Virginia Academy of Family Physician Board, participating in award-winning primary care research, as well as participating in community service. SFFM graduated our first full class of residents in 2008. Of those graduates, five won the “Renaissance Award” given to residents who complete seven learning tasks that prepare residents to take scholarly skills forward into their future careers. In 2009, the Renaissance Award was opened to faculty members as well. This reflects the philosophy of SFFM as a learning community where all participants are learners as well as teachers. In 2009 there will be five recipients of the Renaissance Award including three faculty members. SFFM is in the process of welcoming the next class of new residents and saying goodbye to the graduates of 2009, except for Dr. Kerry Eley who will be joining the faculty. We welcome her expertise in the field of Women’s Health which, in addition to Sports Medicine and Rural Medicine, is one of the strengths of the SFFM curriculum. We look forward to continuing to serve our community as well as help educate the Family Physicians of the future.
