Program Description

The Southern New Mexico Family Medicine Residency Program is the only full, three‑year residency program in the southern half of the state. As an unopposed program, we offer comprehensive, full‑spectrum Family Medicine training with exceptional depth and hands‑on experience. Our program’s strengths include a strong emphasis on border health, as well as advanced training in Hepatitis C and HIV care. Residents benefit from an active telemedicine component and a diverse faculty with expertise spanning Social Medicine, Rural Medicine, Hospital Medicine, and Operative Obstetrics. We conduct integrated daily rounds that bring together Family Medicine faculty, Behavioral Health faculty, and PharmD faculty to provide a truly interdisciplinary learning experience. Residents also complete three dedicated Social Medicine rotations designed to deepen their understanding of health equity, injustices, and structural inequities—key perspectives that enrich both patient care and community engagement. All faculty teach across all aspects of the residency program. Our Family Medicine faculty are actively involved in obstetrics—four out of five possess surgical obstetrics skills—as well as inpatient and outpatient medicine, ensuring residents receive well‑rounded, high‑quality instruction throughout their training.
