In Their Own Words
Finding Fulfillment in a Concierge Practice
The following is part of a series of testimonials from family physicians on finding satisfaction across a variety of practice models.
Thomas W. LaGrelius, MD, FAAFP
Skypark Preferred Family Care, Torrance, California
Concierge primary care and geriatric center
After resigning from the multispecialty group, I opened a solo 24/7/365 conventional family medicine/geriatrics practice. I converted to an essentially cash practice in the mid-1990s and to a concierge practice in the mid-2000s. I now have an amazing practice partner, Nicole Lawrence, MD. We incorporated the practice and are bringing in a third member soon.
In my experience, being directly employed by anyone other than your patients can create conflicting interests and lead to frustration on both sides, disrespect of physicians, and burnout of the primary care physician.
