Joy in Care
“Return joy to patient care.” That was the rallying cry for the 300 physicians and 1,100 non-physician staff members of the Sutter Gould Medical Foundation (SGMF) as they embarked on a Lean transformation project in 2010. Lean is an organizational management methodology that focuses on adding value for customers by continually looking for ways to eliminate waste and improve efficiency. Although Lean is commonly associated with manufacturing, its principles have been applied in many settings, including health care.
Paul DeChant, MD, MBA, FAAFP, the former CEO of Sutter Gould Medical Foundation, was instrumental in the foundation’s Lean transformation. He found the experience challenging, but ultimately rewarding.
