Resident Commission Appointments

Bring the resident perspective to a commission, and work on issues important to AAFP members.
Time commitment away from medical school: Approximately seven days (includes weekends) for travel and attendance at meetings
Funding: Travel covered according to AAFP Travel Policy. A per diem covers expenses to travel to and attend the meeting, including lodging and food.
Commission on Continuing Professional Development
The scope of work of the Commission on Continuing Professional Development (COCPD) includes American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) continuing medical education (CME) accreditation (of various categories); development, presentation, maintenance and refinement of existing and novel CME/continuing professional development (CPD) delivery methods and modalities; CME/CPD aspects of Maintenance of Certification (MOC) and Maintenance of Licensure (MOL); performance improvement CME (PI-CME); AAFP CME curricular framework and AAFP Assembly CME/CPD (oversight planning and evaluation of all CME offered as part of the AAFP Assembly.) It is composed of a chair, 16 active members, one resident member, one student member and one chapter executive. The commission has two subcommittees: Assembly Learning and Credit Systems and Compliance.
The Commission on Continuing Professional Development works directly to support the AAFP’s Strategic Objective on Education by supporting the lifelong learning of family physicians and other health care professionals. The goals of the commission are to guide the Academy’s accreditation and provision of continuing medical education that helps learners demonstrate continuous improvements in knowledge, competence, practice performance, and patient outcomes, as well as fulfill the educational requirements for licensure and certification
Commission on Governmental Advocacy
The scope of work of the Commission on Governmental Advocacy (CGA) includes health system reform and expansion of health care coverage, state/federal legislation, public policy, governmental regulations and regulatory agencies, FamMedPAC, grassroots efforts, and governmental workforce programs. It is composed of a chair, 12 active members, one resident member, one student member and one chapter executive. Currently, the commission has one subcommittee: State Governmental Advocacy.
The goals of the Commission are to guide the Academy's advocacy efforts before the federal government and to assist the constituent chapters in their advocacy efforts before state governments. Advocacy is one of four key priorities for the Academy, making commission membership highly sought after.
Commission on Health of the Public and Science
The scope of work of the Commission on Health of the Public and Science includes health of the public, evidence-based clinical recommendations and care, generation of new knowledge and science with dissemination and implementation, and disparities and the underserved populations. It is composed of a chair, 16 active members, one resident member, one student member and one chapter executive. The commission has the following subcommittee: Subcommittee on Health Equity, Clinical Practice Guidelines, Clinical Preventive Services and Public Health Issues.
The Commission works directly to support strategic objective 4 and especially strategy 1 of the AAFP's Strategic Plan. Members of the commission work with staff to develop and review evidence-based clinical practice guidelines: recommendations for clinical preventive services, including immunizations, and health of the public policies, including tobacco, exercise and obesity. Members also represent the AAFP to federal, medical specialty, voluntary health, and other organizations and serve on a number of advisory committees to Academy programs.
Commission on Membership and Member Services
The scope of work of the Commission on Membership and Member Services (CMMS) includes recruitment, retention, value of membership, member services, life-stage career issues, special needs, awards, international membership, urban/rural membership issues, degree of fellow, special constituencies, National Conference of Special Constituencies (NCSC) planning and chapter relations, and leadership development. It is composed of a chair, 12 active members, one resident member, one student member two chapter executives and one AAFP Board Liaison.
The goals of this Commission are to guide the Academy’s membership efforts and to assist the constituent chapters in their membership efforts.
Commission on Quality and Practice
The scope of work of the Commission on Quality and Practice is to study and develop recommendations, policies, and programs for family medicine in the following areas: health care delivery systems (e.g., PCMH, ACOs), performance measurement, practice redesign/quality improvement, privileging, health information technology, practice management, private sector advocacy, and physician payment. It is composed of a chair, 12 active members, one resident member, one student member and one chapter executive. This commission does not have a subcommittee.
The mission of the Commission on Quality and Practice is to provide a venue for the development of recommended policy related to the practicing family physician.
