Advocate for IPV awareness on local, state and national levels to support advocacy, education, and public health measures that address IPV issues.

Objectives

  • Promote evidence-based tools for the screening and diagnosis of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) by Family Physicians. 
  • Advocate for enhanced educational resources for AAFP members on IPV prevalence, risk factors, health consequences, and societal impact.
  • Promote the use of community resources and networking as referral sources for patients affected by IPV.
  • Advocate for resources specific to IPV awareness and knowledge amongst Family Physicians.
  • Empower patients to succeed in creating healthy intimate partner relationships.
  • Assist the AAFP membership in recruitment and retention of Family Physicians in making a difference in the lives of their patients by screening for and treating IPV, which is of epidemic proportion. 

Long-term Goals

  • Advocate for enhanced educational resources for AAFP members regarding IPV through the development of educational materials for Physicians, Residents and Medical students.
  • Provide to Family Physicians around the country evidence-based screening, diagnosis and treatment options for IPV, with screening to include not only the persons on the receiving end of IPV but also aimed to the persons who may, knowingly or unknowingly, be perpetrators of IPV.
  • Provide ongoing support for AAFP Members on IPV referral sources and networking with existing local and national IPV-related programs. 
  • Advocate for IPV awareness on local, state and national levels to support advocacy, education, and public health measures that address IPV issues.
  • Develop leadership of MIG participants by creating opportunities through advocacy and education.
  • Engage and coordinate the members of the IPV MIG at AAFP meetings such as AAFP FMX, as appropriate.
