Family physicians looking for help paying off their medical school debt might consider popping into a virtual job fair( offered by the National Health Service Corps (NHSC) on Oct. 20 from 6:45-9:45 p.m. EDT.

Participants will be privy to updates about job opportunities currently open at NHSC-approved sites.

The action takes place in "virtual rooms" where site representatives give 15-minute presentations followed by a question-and-answer period.

Based on past events, physicians can expect representatives from as many as 40 sites to be available during the virtual fair -- all ready to answer questions about the flavor of their local communities and the health needs of their community populations.

Representatives will also be happy to provide details on a site's clinical environment, the available position and the job benefits package.

As a reminder to readers, the NHSC offers tax-free loan repayment assistance( to qualified physicians and other health care professionals who agree to work in communities designated as health professional shortage areas(

Applicants typically sign on for a two-year stint serving patients in one of the country's roughly 6,000 communities that desperately need primary care physicians. In return, physicians can receive as much as $50,000 in loan repayment assistance.

In other NHSC news, physicians also have an upcoming opportunity to participate in a free webinar( on Oct. 27 from 8-9 p.m. EDT titled "Career Development and Leadership Opportunities in Primary Care."

The webinar's sponsor -- the Health Resources and Services Administration -- aims to reach medical students who want to know more about primary care medicine, as well as physicians who have recently embarked on their primary care careers.
