Academy, AAFP Foundation Monitoring Local Needs After Wildfire

The Hawaii AFP has launched a webpage with several options for donating to organizations that are assisting in relief efforts, including the American Red Cross, Maui United Way and the Hawaii Salvation Army. The site also links to opportunities for physicians who can volunteer to provide medical care, as well as resources for patients on Maui and information for the local community.

AAFP EVP and CEO Shawn Martin, as well as the AAFP Foundation, have been in contact with the HAFP and local members to keep family physicians informed about the best ways to help, and to look for additional opportunities to offer assistance through the Foundation’s disaster relief partner organizations.

As of Aug. 16, three fires that had burned more than 3,400 acres on Maui and damaged more than 2,000 structures were still active. The death toll topped 110 on Aug. 17, and about 1,000 people were still missing. Residents of Lahaina and Upper Kula have been advised not to drink or boil water due to potential contamination.
