Creating FP Leaders in Health Equity

The Academy and the Association of Family Medicine Residency Directors established the Health Equity Fellowship in 2018 to develop family physician leaders with expertise on the social, cultural and institutional influences on patient health, especially the health of underserved communities and minority groups. The fellowship is an integral part of the Academy’s work to create leaders who can address health inequity at the individual, community and system levels.

Throughout the year-long fellowship, fellows will work with mentors and AAFP staff to improve their knowledge of health equity and learn how to translate that into clinical practice. The fellowship culminates in a capstone research project where fellows conduct field research, present findings and gain expertise while making a real difference in the care their patients receive.

    Improving Health Equity for All

The Health Equity Fellowship is one of several Academy efforts to improve health equity and help family physicians address health disparities.

These include a number of high-quality interactive CME products, as well as ongoing programs such as the Center for Diversity and Health Equity and its signature initiative, The EveryONE Project.
