The article “Treating Onychomycosis” (February 15, 2001, page 663) contained confusing information about the dosage of fluconazole (Diflucan) in the treatment of onychomycosis. The text on page 668 (third full paragraph, first sentence) states that, in one study, a dosage of 450 mg taken once weekly for three months had a 90 percent clinical cure rate. Table 2 suggests a dosage of 150 mg once weekly for as long as six to nine months. The 150-mg weekly dosage is the more commonly used dosage. Neither dosage, however, is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of onychomycosis.
