  1. Use the Strengths, School, Home, Activities, Drugs/substance use, Emotions/eating/depression, Sexuality, Safety (SSHADESS) screen for psychosocial assessment of adolescent patients.

  2. Use the Ask Suicide-Screening Questions (ASQ) tool to screen for suicide risk in patients ages 10 to 21 years in all medical settings.

  3. Screen adolescent patients for substance use at all clinical preventive services visits.

  4. Use the Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) strategy in adolescent patients with substance use disorders or at risk of such disorders.

  5. Counsel adolescent patients and their families about media use, including assessment of the quality and quantity of use, implementation of a Family Media Use Plan, and avoidance of exposure to mobile devices or screens for at least 1 hour before bedtime.
