What is the FMIG Network?

The AAFP established the National Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG) Network in 1995 to aid communication and the exchange of best practices between FMIG students and faculty leaders across the country. The network consists of student FMIG leaders and campus-based faculty, five appointed Regional Coordinators, one elected National Coordinator, a liaison to the Latino Medical Student Association, and a liaison to the Student National Medical Association. These coordinators serve as consultants to and resources for FMIGs.

Develop the family medicine workforce and advance the specialty of family medicine by strengthening current and aspiring medical students to be prepared for and choose to pursue a career in family medicine in the U.S.

FMIG Network Strategic Objectives

• Develop a robust family medicine workforce that is inclusive and representative of those underrepresented in medicine.
• Raise the awareness, understanding, and confidence of U.S. and international medical students to choose family medicine and spread a shared vision for the future of family medicine and primary care in the U.S.
• Develop leadership skills and competencies that will enable and encourage future family physicians to excel in a primary care career and influence the health care system.
• Encourage the success and effectiveness of FMIGs and increase their ability to collaborate with other family medicine and ally organizations.
• Empower FMIG Network members—student and faculty leaders and supporters—to challenge social and systemic barriers to health equity.

Join the FMIG Network Online Community

The AAFP hosts an online community to support local FMIG efforts. Join this student-only space today to stay updated on the latest news and opportunities for FMIGs, plus ask questions, and share ideas with fellow medical student leaders in FMIGs. A separate community is also available for faculty and staff FMIG advisors and supporters.

Become an FMIG Leader

Locally and nationally, there are many FMIG leadership opportunities. Leadership in an FMIG or with the FMIG Network can help you extend your network, share your passion, and build your CV for residency applications.

Local leadership

Joining the FMIG leadership team at your school will give you experience in a variety of areas, plus help you develop your strengths. Check with current leaders, or the faculty FMIG advisor, to learn how to run for a position.

FMIG Network leadership

The FMIG Network is led by a group of eight students who serve as coordinators and liaisons. All AAFP medical student members are eligible to apply for a position. Learn more about the application cycles and responsibilities associated with these roles.
