About the AI Hackathon

Join clinicians, innovators and leaders at FMX for a hands-on, collaborative experience focused on designing AI and digital tools that solve real-world challenges in primary care. Come with an idea and leave with a prototype concept you can share with other colleagues. No coding experience required.

Over four hours, you’ll participate in a structured event where you’ll:

  • Solve real-world challenges: Learn how to use AI tools to tackle real, day-to-day pain points you face in practice with a focus on making a measurable impact

  • Design practical, actionable solutions: Turn ideas into implementable tools that can work in today’s clinical environments

  • Become part of a network of innovators: Work alongside peers on a team and consult expert mentors to bring forward-thinking digital health solutions to life

  • Three teams will receive cash prizes, complimentary registration to FMX 2027 and recognition.

Facilitator and guests

The FMX AI Hackathon is facilitated by family physician Paulius Mui, MD, a leader in primary care technology innovation and hackathon facilitation. Dr. Mui is an advisor to the AAFP’s Primary Care Innovation Network (PCIN) and the founder of X = Primary Care.

In addition, participants will have access to other industry technology experts serving as mentors throughout the event.

Hackathon format

  1. Identify challenges and teams. Get hands-on with curated AI and digital health tools through guided demos. Then, join a team to explore and define a real-world primary care challenge, focusing on where AI and emerging technologies can make the greatest impact.

  2. Build solutions. Teams will have approximately two-and-a-half hours to design and develop practical solutions. Using AI tools, you’ll create frameworks or early-stage prototypes with support from experienced mentors.

  3. Share insights. Present your team’s solution and key takeaways. Each presentation contributes to a broader understanding of how AI can drive meaningful innovation in primary care.

  4. Awards and closing remarks. Submissions will be reviewed against a provided scoring rubric to select the top three teams.
