Stronger Teams. Smarter Systems. Healthier Patients.

The AAFP’s Whole Health Summit (WHS) is designed to help you work on problems that get in the way of your work and well-being. At this conference, you'll address:

    • what makes you feel frustrated or ineffective as a family physician
    • what keeps you from setting aside work or spending more time with your patients
    • what affects your quality of life and your health

Not every family physician is the same. The education tracks offer options to fit your priorities. You’ll get insights on leadership, practice management and burnout from family physicians with experience clearing their own hurdles. View workshop examples

What you can expect at the Whole Health Summit

This isn’t the old Physician Health and Well-being Conference, or a getaway for yoga and meditation. WHS helps you face—and fix—what causes you stress.

Three days of personalized learning, coaching and planning

Day 1: What’s bothering you? Pick the track for that problem.

Day 2: Start hands-on learning in small groups. You’ll get help examining your problem differently.

Day 3: Build a personal 90-day action plan. This is how you'll drive change back home.

“This conference is about helping you figure out how to make yourself feel better
and how to make your practice better.”

Margot Savoy,  MD, MPH, CPE, FAAFP, Chief Medical Officer and Whole Health Summit Chair

Why did the AAFP create the Whole Health Summit?

You have so many responsibilities, and people assume you know how to do it all—from leadership and technology to practice operations and clinical guidelines. It can be overwhelming.

Members have told us they want education on nonclinical topics to help them feel more confident in these areas. That's why this event is focused on whole-person health for physicians, offering what you need to care for your team, yourself and, ultimately, your patients.

The event includes time for you to focus on:

    • feeling more confident as a team leader
    • finding new ways, such as leveraging lifestyle and integrative medicine ideas, to inspire behavior changes
    • innovative ideas for supporting your care teams, and
    • professional renewal strategies to help when you’re struggling

You already put patients first. They need to know you put yourself first. This is an opportunity to get the support you need so you can be more joyful and healthy.

How is this event different from other AAFP events?

You can earn CME at WHS, but it’s much larger than a CME course.

It’s also smaller and more targeted than FMX. WHS offers immersive learning focused on strengthening teams and streamlining work so you have more time with your patients and families.

The conference name has whole health in it. What does that mean to me as a family doctor?

Whole health is a big term. Our conference isn’t a conversation about—or training on—this model. It’s a way to help you with the elements of whole health that impact the way you practice and improve your well-being.

How do we define whole health? It’s: physical, behavioral, spiritual, and socioeconomic well-being as defined by individuals, families, and communities. Whole health care is an interprofessional, team-based approach anchored in trusted relationships to promote well-being, prevent disease, and restore health.

It aligns with a person's life mission, aspiration, and purpose. It shifts the focus from a reactive disease-oriented medical care system to one that prioritizes disease prevention, health, and well-being. It changes the health care conversation from "What's wrong with you?" to "What matters to you?" This model holds promise for improving not only patients’ health but also the well-being of health care workers and public health overall.

Talking about well-being is not really my thing. Does that matter?

You don’t have to be a believer to attend! As Dr. Savoy puts it: "Even if it’s not ‘your thing,’ you can still incorporate some of these lessons to make your day better. You can show up for people in a different way."

So no, well-being doesn't have to be your thing to make your WHS experience valuable. This conference is built to help you remove a professional stressor from your life. As you work with coaches and colleagues, you may find an unexpected way to make things better.
