• COVID-19: Changes to CME Requirements

As you focus on serving your patients, and AAFP has canceled all live, in-person CME events through the end of the year, we want to make sure you have one less thing to worry about. Thus, we are making the following changes related to CME requirements and dues, effective immediately:

    • AAFP members whose CME re-election cycle ends on Dec. 31, 2020, who have not met the requirement, will have an additional year to fulfill their CME requirement.

We hope these changes provide you with the flexibility you need to remain an AAFP member.

For any questions, please contact the Member Resource Center at (800) 274-2237 or aafp@aafp.org.

My CME re-election cycle ends on December 31, 2020 and I haven’t had time to earn and report all my CME. Is my membership at risk of being canceled?

Members whose CME re-election cycle ends on December 31, 2020 will receive a one-year extension of their CME re-election cycle. Your new deadline to earn and report CME is December 31, 2021.

My CME re-election cycle ends on December 31, 2020. If I can earn and report the necessary CME by that deadline will my next CME re-election cycle still be extended by one year?

Yes, your next CME re-election cycle will be extended by one year. If you prefer to not have your re-election cycle extended, please contact our Member Resource Center staff at (800) 274-2237 or aafp@aafp.org and they can adjust your re-election cycle dates.

Since so many in-person meetings are being canceled, do I still need to meet the Live CME requirement as part of my CME re-election cycle?

Yes, you are still required to earn and report at least 25 credits of Live CME during your CME re-election cycle. Live activities take place in real time, involve two or more physicians, and provide the opportunity for real-time interaction between learners and faculty.

Examples of activities that qualify for Live credit include:

    • Medical seminars or conferences either attended in-person or via live-stream
    • Lecture series
    • Teaching (i.e., medical students, residents, nurses, PA’s, other healthcare professionals)
    • Life support activities (e.g., ACLS, ATLS, BLS, NALS, PALS)
    • Live Internet activities
