Description

We offer one-week trips usually to the Caribbean or to Central American countries to contribute to and learn about local health needs and infrastructure. Clinical services are provided to local residents with the assistance of non-governmental organizations. Residents may pursue other international opportunities with program approval as well. These are offered on first-come-first serve basis, typically no more than one trip per interested resident, and based on scheduling availability and progress toward graduation.

Field experience

Under the supervision of residency faculty and other U.S.-based faculty or local physicians, residents participate in clinical care of patients in underserved areas. Clinical setting range from well established clinics with year-on-year continuity to temporary clinics based on local needs. We are assisted on site by local organizations made up of nationals, expatriates, or a combination of the two. Duration may be from 7 to 10 days for residency-sponsored programs. Living conditions are generally quite basic.

Didactics

Pre-trip reading is assigned, with discussion of relevant clinical topics during pre-trip planning. Each resident is tasked with delivering an educational teaching topic of choice to fellow participants and/or clinic community at the site, depending on the trip.

Additional cost information

Residency will cover cost of one trip per resident (up to $1,500) for program-sponsored trips. Others will be covered as funds allow. Residents may use Educational Stipend/CME money to fund trip if needed.
