    Deadlines Approaching for Many Appointed Leadership Roles

    July 31, 2023, News Staff — Residents and students elected more than a dozen of their peers to leadership roles during the 2023 National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students.

    Those who were elected by delegates to the National Congress of Family Medicine Residents and the National Congress of Student Members at the conference, held July 27-29 at the Kansas City, Mo., Convention Center, will be confirmed by the AAFP Board of Directors (or other relevant family medicine organizations) in the coming weeks.

    “We are so excited about the diversity this class of elected leaders brings to the AAFP,” said Vice President of Medical Education Karen Mitchell, M.D. “These leaders bring a variety of backgrounds, identities and experiences that will strengthen the AAFP policies and priorities they help shape. This class represents gender, race and geographic diversity, as well as U.S. and international medical schools and allopathic and osteopathic training.”

    The elected residents are:

    Resident member, AAFP Board of Directors: Janet Nwaukoni, D.O., Northwestern McGaw Family Medicine Residency at Lake Forest, Ill.

    Resident chair, 2024 National Conference: Bright Zhou, M.D., Stanford — O’Connor Family Medicine Residency, San Jose, Calif.

    Resident alternate delegates, AAFP Congress of Delegates: Aerial Petty, D.O., Family Medicine Residency Program at New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center, New York; Rebecca Stoll, D.O., Mayo Clinic Family Medicine Residency, Rochester, N.Y.

    Resident member, AAFP Foundation Board of Trustees: Kelly Dougherty, M.D., Mercy Family Medicine Residency, St. Louis

    Resident member, Society of Teachers of Family Medicine Board of Directors: Paola Lepe, M.D., Stanford — O’Connor Family Medicine Residency, San Jose, Calif.

    Resident Member, Association of Family Medicine Residency Directors Board of Directors: Ijeoma Amanze, M.D., Family Medicine Residency Program of LSU Health Shreveport, Monroe, La.

    The conference drew 4,815 registrants, including 1,453 students and 1,320 residents.
