The burden of disease caused by musculoskeletal injuries and conditions is not difficult to demonstrate. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, when the United States saw several years of declining mortality rates, musculoskeletal conditions were among the top causes of years lived with disability (along with mental health conditions). Approximately 25 years of analysis ending in 2016 suggested we had not made strides in treatment to successfully reduce disability.1 A large analysis compiled by orthopedic surgery organizations found that musculoskeletal conditions were the most prevalent primary health conditions among adults, and ranked just below hypertension for adults older than 65 years.2 Approximately 75% of older adults had some type of musculoskeletal condition.

This edition of FP Essentials addresses common conditions of the musculoskeletal system. We have chosen to focus on medium-sized joints: the wrist. elbow, neck, and ankle. In each section, the authors discuss the anatomy and review the physical examination of each of these joints, including specific maneuvers and diagnostic tests. The authors discuss the common conditions family physicians are likely to see, including adult and pediatric conditions. They review management and indications for rehabilitation.

This edition features many detailed tables and figures. The tables highlight the specific maneuvers and diagnostic tests for each joint, and the authors have provided figures from their own collections to illustrate the anatomy and underlying conditions.

We know how common musculoskeletal conditions are in family medicine and how much they affect our patients. I hope this edition equips you with the knowledge and skills to be able to provide even better care.
