CMS offers short extension on MIPS data reporting as IV shortage relief

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has given practices two extra weeks to report or update their 2024 Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) performance data, extending the deadline until 8 p.m. ET on April 14. The extension is to account for last year’s post-Hurricane Helene national IV fluid shortage. In addition to the two-week extension (which all MIPS participants can use), CMS is also reopening the extreme and uncontrollable circumstances (EUC) exception application for practices directly impacted by the IV shortage (applications for other reasons will be denied). Consistent with the EUC policy, CMS will not reweight any performance category for which it has already received data.

Until the new deadline, eligible clinicians and their representatives can submit/update their 2024 MIPS data or apply for an EUC exception through the Quality Payment Program (QPP) website. The extension will push back until mid-June when CMS will release final 2024 scores and open its targeted review period for practices that dispute their scores. CMS has also opened registration for reporting 2025 performance data to the MIPS Value Pathway (MVP). Those who wish to report an MVP have until Dec. 1 to register on the QPP website. Practices that are not in an alternative payment model but want to bill for the new advanced primary care management (APCM) codes will need to register to report the Value in Primary Care MVP.
