The problem with the term physician “burnout”

A recent study found that in 2017 more than half of family physicians reported burnout.1 To describe the current phenomenon and address it effectively, a new term — system-induced distress responsive to multilevel strategies (SDRMS) — puts the blame where it belongs and also acknowledges that the problem is responsive to multiple treatment strategies. In the current issue of FPM, the family physicians who coined the term describe a framework for remedying SDRMS and issue a call to action.
