Why a cover letter is important
A cover letter that quickly tells potential employers and recruiters who you are, what you can do for them, and why you are interested in their opportunity is as important as your CV. Here’s why:
A cover letter provides an opportunity to address any gaps in your education and work timeline that employers are likely to wonder about. Some gaps are easier to explain than others, such as “As you can see on my enclosed CV, I took some time off to raise my children, who are now of school age.” You should also be up-front about situations that are more difficult to explain, such as changing career paths or residency programs. Briefly mention them in your cover letter and then go into further detail during a face-to-face interview if necessary.
