Big changes in E/M coding: 10 tools to help you prepare

FPM Editors
October 27, 2020

Starting in January 2021, evaluation and management (E/M) coding will no longer require that you document the history of present illness, review of systems, or exam bullet points. Instead, E/M coding will be based solely on medical decision making or total time.

To help you prepare for this major change in E/M coding, here are 10 resources from FPM and the AAFP.

1. Countdown to the E/M Coding Changes (an FPM article that describes the changes — part one in a three-part article series),

2. AAFP Coding Reference Cards: 2021 Office Visit E/M Coding & Documentation,

3. A Checklist for Solo and Independent Physicians,

4. A Checklist for Employed Physicians,

5. Practice Training Outline,

6. Questions to Ask Your Vendors,

7. Questions to Ask Private Payers,

8. Template Payer Letter,

9. Talking Points for Employed Physicians,

10. Guidelines and Vignettes Module — coming soon.
