How to help sustain a quality improvement initiative

Sustaining a practice's quality improvement (QI) effort is challenging. Helping team members stay motivated and engaged is critical for continued success. Here are three ways to do it, regardless of your role:

• Combat skepticism by discussing concrete examples of how the team's work will improve patient care,

• Avoid setbacks and stagnation by knowing when to seek input from others and when to take independent action,

• Help keep the entire practice informed and at least peripherally involved in the QI team’s work as it progresses.
